I’m going to be a Recreation Therapist

Dear Mom and Dad,

I’m going to be a Recreation Therapist,

I know you are thinking “What is a Recreation Therapist” and how will I ever survive? I want to explain what the profession is and let you know that I will be ok (and no, it’s not just playing games in a park). I want to help people and I want to do it with as much enjoyment as possible.

Recreation therapy is about helping people get to a level of functioning where they can recover or increase their positive experiences in life. Recreation Therapists help provide guidance and resources for people to get the most out of life and the systematic process is a beautiful and meaningful one.

The differences between what we do and what other therapists do is that we are able to help in a unique way- through leisure. I want people to be able to participate in things they were not able to or were too nervous to try before recreation therapy. The best part about all of this, is that I can help others in a meaningful way and they will not dread coming to sessions.

I can also work with so many different populations, it is really limitless! From any age group with any ability level, people need help connecting to meaningful experiences and I am going to be the person to make the connection.

You see Mom and Dad, everything is going to be fine. I think I’m going to come out a better person with more insight and understanding of people and the world. I know you will be proud!

Love,

Your kid Pisciotta
How did it go when you told/tell your friends and family about Recreation Therapy? We would love to hear from you.
