Stressed out?  Here’s what a Rec. Therapist recommends:

Do something fun.  When you do something that is boring you feel like you never want to do it again, however, when you choose something you enjoy, you are willing to do that activity often.  Every person will choose something different, but when you do make a choice and find yourself motivated to repeat it, it’ll be great.  So think back to something you had fun doing and do it again!  Need some help coming up with ideas?  Check this list out.

Make a Zentangle.  The first thing people would think is, “What are Zentangles?”.  According to their website “Zentangle Method is an easy-to-learn, relaxing, and fun way to create beautiful images by drawing structured patterns”.  They help relieve stress and can promote relaxation.  Zentangles are lines on a paper which become art as you work through a pattern.  Try it out and you’ll soon fall in love with them.

Workout.  This one is a classic, but don’t just go off of what I’m saying.  Research has shown that physical activities help improve mood, energy, and overall well-being.

Complete a Mandala.  Can’t sit down and meditate? Look no further than a Mandala.  If you’ve never heard the name, I can assure you that you’ve seen one around.  A mandala helps a person meditate through the use of art as a way to improve your overall mood.  It helps create unity in the integrated structure which is organized around a unifying center.  Different cultures have been using mandalas throughout history such as the “ying-yang”, religions, Buddhist stupas, and even the Aztecs.

Play sports. Just like working out, sports will help improve your overall physical wellbeing. In addition, sports help control your focus and release that added stress you have by exerting that energy onto the field, court, or whichever are you play in. Oh, and it’s fun!

Do Yoga.  Taking this step is one worth committing to.  Practicing a few yoga postures increases focus, helps regulate the breath, and relax the body by releasing tension from large muscle groups.  When you are feeling stressed you also must remember to focus on your breath.

Learn a new skill.  Only if you like to learn new things will this work.  Otherwise, feel free to skip this.  For those brave to tackle a new skill, think of this as an opportunity to gain some new insight, and become more knowledgeable.  When picking a new skill refer back to our first item, make it fun.  If you don’t, then this new skill will be very difficult to learn.

Paint/Create Art.  Let your inner Picasso run wild with your artwork.  You don’t have to be constricted to painting or any one form.  You can simply draw or work on anything you think is art.  Working on 45 minutes of a creative activity lessens stress in the body.  No talent? No problem!  The best thing about art is that it is beautiful no matter how it turns out.

Listen to music.  Listening to music can have a relaxing effect on our bodies.  It helps to slow the pulse and lower blood pressure.  Music therapists have been using music to improve overall mood.  Some music may help energize you while others will help in making you feel relaxed.  Sit down and pick something you enjoy.

Meditate.  This one takes a little bit of practice, patience, and time to master.  According to Carnegie Mellon University, meditation for 25 minutes for 3 days can help alleviate stress.  At first, you want to start small and work your way up to a longer period of meditation.  It’s important you feel comfortable doing it.  Mindfulness meditation is one type of meditation you start working on, and it helps with anxiety, irritability poor sleep, and control worries.

Dance.  We talked about music helping decrease stress.  Well, guess what?  Dancing is also an outlet for stress reduction.  Not only will you be able to listen to your favorite beat, but dancing to it also has its advantages.  Just like exercise, dancing helps release endorphins which essentially makes you feel happy.  If you have the energy to dance, then turn on that music and get to it!
